Kingston Breakfast Run 16 miles

By rogerbarr @rogerbarr · On March 24, 2013

Quick race report.

Date – Sunday 24th
Time – 8.25am
Location – Kingston
Event – Kingston Breakfast Run
Distance – 16 miles
Terrain – mixed, no long grass
Weather – fecking freezing, sleet and windy (16mph)
Position – 4th out of 1200 starters.
Time – 1.33.06 – PB by over a minute and 5.48s average (Reckon could have held 5.45s if it hadn’t been for wind).

So with the weather making me feel right at home I lined up in my bin bag. Nicely rested from a 55 mile week but with minor ill effects of 40th birthday bash the night before.

Settled into 5th….then 4th and ran completely solo for around 13 miles. Lonely lonely old run. Sleet and wind made it fell run tough.

Had two gels delivered at mile 4 and miles 5-8 + 13-16 were done into the teeth of the wind. Certainly would have been a minute faster without that I reckon.

Felt totally in control chipping out 5.45s and went through 10 in slightly under 57 and the half mara in 1.15. Later learned the mile markers were probably a little short of where they needed to be but still reckon a 58 + 1.16 was done out there respectively.

Feel fine now which is a very good sign. Feet are blistered though and the racing flats do pound the feet.

Got a nice prize at the race presentation. Whole Foods grub although it killed any idea of a run home and the bus journey was a bugger carrying it.

No more races now. I’m done. Backed up 26 miles, 20 mile race and 16 mile race over the last 3 weeks. I’m ready now. Bring out the cotton wool.

Race predictors put the 1.33 as a 2.36 mara, the 1.14.30 half mara as a 2.35 so I’ll be looking to 6 min mile round London I think.

PBs now in the last year for a mile, 10 miles, 13.1 miles, 16 miles, 20 miles. Just the 3.1, 6.2 and mara to go and I’ll be content.

Roger and out
